Don’t do it, kid

Hey, kid, do you want to know what growing up means
It’s what happens when someone gives up on their dreams
It means they are setting themselves up for regret
When they realize later what they haven’t done yet
And they probably never will
That’s a bitter tasting pill
If there’s one thing you never want to say that you did
It’s grow up, don’t ever do it, kid

I’ve heard all the excuses and not one of them is good
The first one you’re likely to hear contains “should”
You should do what’s expected not what you want
That’s because you’ll never really fit in if you don’t
Don’t believe it, it just isn’t true
Those who say it don’t have a clue
If there’s one thing you never want to say that you did
It’s grow up, don’t ever do it, kid

They will say your dream is a bad career choice
They will say it to you in a very clear voice
As if they know what they’re talking about
But listen closely, you will hear the traces of doubt
Watch their eyes as they turn back their gaze
To their own long gone, dream-filled days
If there’s one thing you never want to say that you did
It’s grow up, don’t ever do it, kid

You may be thinking that you don’t have all the right skills
You may be thinking about what it takes to pay bills
You may be thinking about the risks you may have to take
You may be convincing yourself that you’re just not that brave
That it just isn’t quite the right time
But you don’t believe any of these lines
If there’s one thing you never want to say that you did
It’s grow up, don’t ever do it, kid

There are a lot of grown-ups who are walking around
They will tell you that their feet are firm on the ground
What that means is they are practiced at compromise
And blatantly deny that anything has been justified
You decide if that’s how you would live
Is that the best effort you can give
If there’s one thing you never want to say that you did
It’s grow up, don’t ever do it, kid

You run into grown-ups almost every day
They’re not noticeably dressed in any certain way
They are not recognizable by their patterns of speech
Except when they open their mouths up to teach
Then they sound like a worn out tape
They’ll say dreams are a form of escape
If there’s one thing you never want to say that you did
It’s grow up, don’t ever do it, kid

Any kid can live within his or her means
It’s not that they do not care about dreams
Even with dreams it’s one day at a time
Every moment has the seed from a tree called sublime
It can grow without any reason why
To penetrate the earth and the sky
If there’s one thing you never want to say that you did
You can be an adult, but don’t grow up, kid

Hey, kid, do you really want to know the truth
Chasing dreams is not something you just do in your youth
Age isn’t a number it’s a muddled state of mind
You and your dreams you’re both one of a kind
And it’s never too late to grow down
Your head can still wear that crown
If there’s one thing you never want to say that you did
It’s refuse to grow down, don’t do it, kid
