I hope you get to do what you want to do
But you’ll have to do things you don’t want to do, too
You may think that it’s getting that gives meaning to life
But it’s the giving that that will open you up like a knife
Showing you the stuff you’re really made of
And giving you the strength to give away your love
You see, getting what you want is all about you
And, hardly anyone believes they’re getting their due
But giving is a story that never gets old
It’s the alchemy of turning lead into gold
Giving with expectations is a bargain that fails
Giving without wanting is what loving entails
All you have to do is do something good
It isn’t what someone else thinks you should
When in doubt do your best, that’s the best you can do
And you’ll always know that you’ve been true to you
Life will more than likely give what you need
As long as you don’t hurry, or give in to greed
There will always be those who want you to give more
And sometimes their demands will be hard to ignore
They prefer to control, they don’t live and let live
It’s your power and freedom they want you to give
These are the times that will challenge you most
Especially if it’s someone you would like to hold close
But it’s loving that life is really about
It’s loving that will move you past failure and doubt
It’s loving that gives you the space to do both
It’s loving that’s the true foundation of growth
You loving others, it’s important to do
But mostly, it has to be you loving you
